Indie Press Book Fair--Shopportunity!

One of my favorite annual NY events is this weekend, December 3 & 4, the Small Press Center's book fair. Not only will books be available for purchase from awesome presses like Akashic, Soft Skull, and Manic D, but there will be panel discussions, author signings/readings, how-to-get-into-print info sessions, and even an open mic. I'll be there! Maybe this will wrap up my holiday shopping early.

Agh, I can't believe I'm going to miss this! But I'll hope for a report from you on the frontlines. (Also, if you catch any readings, look for Sarah Fisch; she's great.)

hoo boy. Akashic was having a serious sale and I went a little nuts. I was about to say "you people are like rock stars to me," then realized one of them actually IS a rock star.

Also bought a couple titles from Persea. They seem do a lot of short story collections, and they deserve support for this reason alone. Very nice people.

Unfortunately, there was some delusional chick at every table who had to talk to the presses about her book proposal. I wanted to say, yo, girl, why don't you READ a book first, preferably one about the publishing game? Then write yours, THEN approach the right press for you? Now get out of my way so I can actually SUPPORT these guys!

This is why I can't be a small publisher any more.

I'd love to read more about this chick (who was once me), and some of the other pitfalls you've found in running a small press.
